Nesting season is approaching and some if it has already started. One of my favorite things about this time of year is the “ramping” up of nest building in our wading bird rookeries. Great egrets, snowy egrets, little blue and tricolored herons, green herons and more all nest together in a common area, called a rookery. This place can be a loud, raucous frenzy of activity from now until the eggs hatch and the babies fledge the nest. If you want to see this action in full swing, visit Pinckney Island NWR or the town of Port Royal and their boardwalk that goes right in the midst of a wading bird rookery. Both are only about 20 minutes from Oldfield and well worth the trip!
