BY: GREG CROSBY, SUMMER TENNIS DIRECTOR To hit a drop shot, turn your feet sideways and take your racquet back with an open face. You will want to keep your backswing shorter than normal. You will most likely want to hit this shot when you are inside the baseline and your opponent is behind the baseline. As you move your weight forward, carve down and slice through the ball with an open faced racket. Keep your back straight and bend at the knees rather than the waist. Sink your weight down into your legs as you lower your body and racket. The ball will rise because you have carved under it. This will cause the ball to have backspin and give the height needed to clear the net. On your follow through, keep your shoulders level and maintain good posture while keeping the racquet face open. Once you have the basic drop shot figured out, you can disguise it to open up the court!
